President Shapton called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. on Wednesday March 23, 1988 in the Faculty Lounge of the Memorial Union.

Roll: Twenty five members/alternates were present. Absent were: Mark Osborne, Ralph Hodek, Jorma Kalliokoski, Randy Owsley, Willie Melton, Steve Hoerger, and Dale Stein.

Visitors: Linda Belote, Dean of Students, was the only visitor.

Minutes of Meeting No. 160 were approved.

President's Report - Appendix A (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

President Shapton also commented briefly on the social with the Board of Control and also discussed his description of the Senate as he will present it at the Board of Control meeting.

Vice President's Report - Appendix B (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Committee Reports

A. Curricular Policy - No report.

B. Instructional Policy - No report.

C. Institutional Evaluation - Appendix C (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

D. Budget - Appendix D (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Senator Predebon discussed some of the aspects of the Incentive Retirement Program. He pointed out that half of the retiring faculty will be replaced. Of the half being replaced any unit may receive 0-100% of the allotted dollars for the position. Senator Predebon also pointed out that the University presently has a deficit of $1.2 million due primarily to state funding cutbacks and under the new retirement program this is expected to be reduced to $.7 million within five years.

E. Faculty Fringe Benefits - No report.

F. Elections

Senator Tampas reported that he will have election material out later in the term.

G. Faculty Handbook - No report.

H. Planning - No report.

I. General Education - No report.

J. University Computer Committee - Appendix E (Available by Request from the Senate Office).

K. Quality of University Life Task Force

Senator Adler announced that the committee is expecting the survey results to be returned soon and hopes to get a feel of the students' ideas on improving university life.

 

Old Business - None

 

New Business

Vice President Whitten reported the impact that the new Physics degree program will have will be discussed at the next Academic Council meeting. The changes in the PH206 and PH310 labs may cause difficulty for a number of students. People with concerns should make sure any comments are made early.
